Understanding Go Kart Tire Dimensions

Go-kart tires come in a range of sizes but are typically described by their diameter and width. Typical go-kart tire diameters range from 6 to 12 inches, with 8 and 10 inches standard. Width can range from 3.5 inches up to 7 inches or more.

Tire diameter impacts the overall height and ground clearance of the go-kart. Smaller diameter tires sit lower to the ground, while larger diameters give you more ground clearance.

Tire width impacts the contact patch and grip. Wider tires can provide more cornering grip thanks to a larger contact patch, while narrower tires are often lighter and more agile.

To determine the full tire size, the diameter and width are combined with a dash in between. For example, a standard size is 6-6, a 6-inch diameter and 6-inch width tire.

Some key go-kart tire sizes include:

  • 4.10-5 – Best for small go-karts and kids. Low height and lightweight.
  • 6-6 – Popular all-around size. Good balance of stability and agile handling.
  • 8-8 – Provides more cushion and higher ground clearance for off-road.
  • 10-6 – Large diameter for high-speed stability with moderate width.
  • 10-8 – Very large for maximum stability and traction. Best for racing.

Go Kart Tire Pressure

Proper inflation pressure is critical for maximizing the performance of your go-kart tires. Underinflating causes excessive wear, overheating, and instability. Overinflating reduces traction and braking performance.

The proper pressure varies based on your tire size, track conditions, and the weight of the driver. Always start with the pressure recommendation printed on the tire sidewall or owner’s manual. Then, do fine-tuning to your needs.

For street and dirt track driving, average pressures are 4.10-5 tires – 12-18 psi

  • 6-6 tires – 8-12 psi
  • 8-8 tires – 6-10 psi

Reduce pressure by 2-4 psi for wet conditions to improve traction. For high-speed racing, increase pressures up to the maximum sidewall pressure.
